How is the World Different?

  1. Prince Albert never died. He was extremely ill from typhoid for a time and, as a result, lives mostly in seclusion. But he did survive, and is now co-ruler with Victoria.
  2. There are several disparate branches within the Anglican Church. One of them is trying to start another inquisition. This branch of the Church is the most restrictive, unforgiving, and feared.
  3. Out of Game info: Some magic and supernatural things do exist. These cannot be obviously visible, as the Church would count such actions as heresy.

In-game: Some supernatural elements, such as séances and gypsy lore, are tolerated by the Church within reason. The amount of legal magical activity is often directly related to the amount of money one donates to the Church. Regardless, some branches within the Church are not as accommodating, and too many obviously supernatural activities will still result in one standing trial for heresy. Besides, that's all trickery anyway, and any respectable person knows magic doesn't really exist.

  4. There are rumors of strange things living in the sewers, as well as strange activities and noises coming from underground.
  5. Technology is considerably more advanced. Steam powered conveyances, such as the famous steam-powered Ostrich, are commonplace among the wealthy. Inventors are working on various other modes of technology, including steam, electricity, and clockworks. Clockwork curiosities are also common is most wealthy houses.
  6. The most obvious example of advanced technology are the Brassy's Men, a creation of Dr. Pietr Brainerd. The Brassy's Men are the first automata which are not only indestructible, but also independently reasoning creations.

Other technology, including construction equipment and public transport, have benefited greatly from harnessing steam power more efficiently. Alas, while steam technology is becoming common, the number of people with a mastery and understanding of utilizing such technologies is still frighteningly small.
